Void branches and timing cycles

What is Tenchusatsu?

Tenchusatsu is the Sanmei-gaku concept of two earthly branches becoming 'void' for a given chart. It is not simply a bad-luck period. It is better understood as a phase when ordinary frameworks become less reliable, making it useful for reflection, preparation, re-learning, and reorganisation.

Two kinds of Tenchusatsu

There are two important ways to talk about Tenchusatsu. One is the Tenchusatsu group built into the natal chart. The other is timing Tenchusatsu, which appears when the void branches arrive in years, months, or days.

The natal group shows which two branches are structurally void for the person. Timing Tenchusatsu shows when those branches are activated in time.

In both cases, the idea is not punishment. It is a weakening of ordinary support structures, which can make expansion less stable and inner work more meaningful.

Why two branches become void

The ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches move together in order. Because there are ten stems but twelve branches, each group of ten stem-branch combinations leaves two branches without a matching stem.

Those two leftover branches are called void branches. Across the full sixty-cycle, this creates six Tenchusatsu groups.

For example, one group leaves Dog and Boar void, another leaves Monkey and Rooster void, and so on through the six groups.

Each row is one Tenchusatsu group. The void branches change every ten stem-branch pairs.

The six groups

The six groups are Rat-Ox, Tiger-Rabbit, Dragon-Snake, Horse-Goat, Monkey-Rooster, and Dog-Boar Tenchusatsu.

Each group has a symbolic direction and life theme. These themes are not mechanical labels, but they help describe where ordinary support may feel thinner and where the person may develop a unique pattern.

It is usually easiest to calculate the group from the day pillar's stem-branch number rather than trying to infer it from memory.

Fate Tenchusatsu is calculated from the day pillar's 60 stem-branch number: 1-10 Dog-Boar, 11-20 Monkey-Rooster, 21-30 Horse-Goat, 31-40 Dragon-Snake, 41-50 Tiger-Rabbit, 51-60 Rat-Ox.

Annual, monthly, and daily Tenchusatsu

If a person's Tenchusatsu group is Tiger-Rabbit, then Tiger and Rabbit years, months, and days are timing Tenchusatsu.

Annual Tenchusatsu lasts for two years in each twelve-year cycle. Monthly and daily Tenchusatsu are shorter and can be useful for planning, reflection, or understanding why a day feels less settled.

A Tenchusatsu day does not mean that nothing should be done. It simply suggests that forcing expansion or major new commitments may feel less supported than organising, reviewing, or preparing.

How to use Tenchusatsu

Tenchusatsu is most useful when treated as a rhythm, not a fear. It can be a time for sorting, stepping back, studying, repairing, or loosening attachment to fixed plans.

Travel, unexpected change, and unusual encounters can occur during these periods, but interpretation depends on the whole chart and context.

FATE DECODER calculates your Tenchusatsu group and displays timing information, including daily rhythms in the calendar view.

FAQ

Is Tenchusatsu a bad-luck period?

No. It is better understood as a time when ordinary frameworks are less stable. It can be useful for preparation, learning, review, and inner adjustment.

How do I know my Tenchusatsu group?

It is calculated from the day pillar's position in the sixty stem-branch cycle. FATE DECODER shows it automatically from your birth date.

Should I avoid all action during Tenchusatsu?

No. The point is not avoidance, but choosing actions with awareness. Review, preparation, maintenance, and learning often fit the period better than forceful expansion.
